Wind & Solar Energy

How Does It Work?

Wind Energy

The silhouettes of a mother and daughter are shown standing in the foreground with their hands raised in the air. A group of wind turbines are shown in the distance at sunset.

How Does Wind Energy Work?

Wind energy harnesses the natural kinetic energy in the wind to generate electricity. It is a clean and renewable resource that is becoming increasingly important in today’s energy landscape. This process involves the use of wind turbines; towering structures with blades that rotate when caught by the wind.

These turbines can be installed in a variety of settings, from vast, open plains to hilltops and coasts, making wind farms a common sight in regions known for strong and consistent winds. Maintenance of wind turbines is straightforward, focusing on ensuring their efficient operation over time.

When turbines reach the end of their lifespan, they are dismantled, with efforts made to recycle and repurpose materials whenever possible, minimizing environmental impact.

Solar Energy

A farmer's gloved hands are shown planting a small plant in front of a row of solar panels.

How Does Solar Energy Work?

Much like how your crops harness the power of the sun to create energy and grow, solar power harnesses the sun’s energy to create electricity through photovoltaic (PV) panels, which can be set up anywhere, from large fields to rooftops. These panels need little maintenance and are recyclable when they’re no longer operational.

Large-scale solar, also called utility-scale solar, has boomed lately, reflecting a nationwide shift toward cleaner energy. These projects, often over 10 megawatts (MW), help power homes and businesses nationwide. As solar technology keeps improving, costs are dropping, and policies are encouraging more solar farms, leading to a bright future for renewable energy.
